Speed & Driving Conditions
Posted limits are maximums for ideal conditions; safe drivers adjust to weather and traffic.
Speed limits
A posted limit is the maximum allowed under ideal conditions, not a required speed. Slow down when visibility, traffic, or the road surface make the posted speed unsafe.
Rain and wet roads
When rain first begins, oil and dust form a slippery film, so reduce speed and increase following distance. Wet roads also lengthen stopping distance and can cause hydroplaning.
Handling a hydroplane
If your tires lose contact with the road, ease off the accelerator and steer straight rather than braking hard. Hold the wheel steady until the tires regain grip.
