The Driver & Vehicle

A legal, roadworthy vehicle and a responsible driver are the foundation of safe motoring in New Zealand.

Warrant of Fitness

A current Warrant of Fitness (WoF) shows the vehicle has passed a regular safety inspection covering items like brakes, tyres and lights. Driving without a current WoF is an offence.

Registration and licensing

Vehicles must be registered and have a current licence (rego) to be used on the road. Diesel and heavy vehicles also need road user charges.

Seat belts and restraints

The driver is responsible for ensuring passengers under 15 are properly restrained with a seat belt or approved child restraint. Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt where one is fitted.
