Give-Way Rules & Right of Way
In New Zealand, when you are turning at an intersection, you must give way to:
- AOnly vehicles on your left
- BOnly pedestrians
- CAll vehicles that are not turningCorrect
- DNobody, because turning traffic has priority
Why: A key New Zealand rule: if you are turning, give way to all vehicles that are going straight through (not turning). (Official New Zealand Road Code, give-way rules)
Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
When passing a cyclist, you should:
- ASound your horn and squeeze past
- BPass as close as you can
- CExpect the cyclist to ride off the road
- DGive them plenty of room, at least 1.5 metres where practical, and pass only when safeCorrect
Why: Cyclists are vulnerable; leave a wide gap, ideally at least 1.5 metres, and pass only when it is clear and safe. (Official New Zealand Road Code, sharing the road)
