Safe Driving & Sharing the Road

Sharing the road with cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians calls for space, patience and good observation.

Following distance and lane use

Keep a two-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions and more when it is wet. Keep left unless you are overtaking or positioning to turn right.

Cyclists

Give cyclists plenty of room when passing, ideally at least 1.5 metres, and only pass when it is clear and safe. Check for cyclists before opening a door or turning across a cycle lane.

Motorcyclists and pedestrians

Motorbikes are small and easy to miss, so look carefully and check blind spots before turning or changing lanes. Give way to pedestrians and take extra care near crossings and schools.
