Give-Way Rules & Right of Way
New Zealand's give-way rules are distinctive, so learn them carefully before you drive.
Turning gives way to straight-through
If you are turning, you must give way to all vehicles that are not turning. A vehicle going straight through has priority over one that is turning across its path.
Two vehicles turning
When two vehicles coming from opposite directions both turn into the same road, the vehicle turning right gives way to the vehicle turning left. Making eye contact and signalling early helps avoid confusion.
Uncontrolled intersections and roundabouts
At an uncontrolled crossroads, give way to traffic on your right, and at a T-intersection the road that ends gives way to the through road. At a roundabout, give way to any vehicle that will cross your path from your right and travel clockwise.
