Road Signs & Markings
New Zealand signs and road markings use shape and colour to tell you the rules and warn of hazards.
Regulatory signs
Signs with a red ring or red border show something you must not do, such as no entry or no right turn. A red-and-white downward triangle is a GIVE WAY sign and a red octagon is a STOP sign.
Warning signs
Permanent warning signs are yellow diamonds with black symbols, alerting you to bends, intersections and other hazards ahead. Temporary warnings around road works are orange.
Road markings
A yellow no-passing line on your side of the centre means it is unsafe to overtake and you must not cross it to pass. White lane lines separate traffic travelling in the same direction.
