Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, stay visible, and give room to larger and more vulnerable road users. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second following distance in good conditions and add more time on wet, icy, or crowded roads. More space gives you time to react if traffic stops suddenly.
Trucks and school buses
Large trucks have big blind spots and long stopping distances, so avoid lingering beside them or cutting in closely ahead. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm out, and stay stopped until it withdraws them.
Distracted driving
Oklahoma prohibits reading, writing, or sending text messages while driving. Set your route and phone before you start and keep your eyes on the road.
