PTCB publishes the PTCE content outline for free (the version effective January 6, 2026), and sells two practice tools of its own built from former exam questions: the PTCE Practice Bank and the Pre-PTCE. Beyond PTCB, the main choices are a printed or eBook study guide (Mometrix, PrepPass) or a question-bank app (Pocket Prep). The PrepPass guide is PDF + EPUB, 260 pages, $19.99 one time, with 100 practice questions inside and 400 more free on this site.

How to choose
Keeping the cost down
The outline is free, and so is the PrepPass question bank. A single study guide (Mometrix at $27.99 for the eBook, PrepPass at $19.99) plus PTCB's $29 Pre-PTCE as a final check covers teaching, practice and a readiness test.
Weak on pharmacy math
Choose a resource that works calculations step by step rather than one that only gives answers. The PrepPass guide works the common calculation types (days supply, IV rates, alligation, ratio strength) step by step; PTCB's Practice Bank lets you focus a session on calculations.
Exam in a month
Week one: read the outline and the chapters for your weakest domain. Weeks two and three: practice questions every day. Final week: take the Pre-PTCE once, then review what you missed. A question-bank app such as Pocket Prep fits short daily sessions.
You already work in a pharmacy
You may need less teaching and more practice on what the outline weights most (Medications is 35%). A question bank, PTCB's Practice Bank or Pocket Prep, may be all you need beyond a quick read of the law and safety chapters.

Questions people ask
Are free PTCB practice tests enough, or should I buy a prep book?
Free questions show you where you stand, but they do not teach. If practice keeps exposing the same gaps, such as calculations or federal law, a book fills them. PTCB's own paid tools ($65 Practice Bank, $29 Pre-PTCE) are practice only; a study guide is the teaching part.
Is there a PTCB study guide PDF with worked calculation examples?
Yes. The PrepPass PTCB guide is PDF + EPUB, 260 pages, $19.99 one time, with pharmacy math worked step by step and 100 practice questions, and a 14-day refund. Mometrix sells its PTCB guide as an eBook at $27.99.
What is PTCB's own practice exam and how much does it cost?
PTCB sells two tools: the PTCE Practice Bank ($65; 300+ former PTCE questions and 400 flashcards) and the Pre-PTCE ($29; one practice exam built from retired questions, with explanations). PTCB suggests using the Practice Bank first and the Pre-PTCE as a final check.

What does the PrepPass PTCB guide not include?
No printed copy, video or live teaching, and its questions are written by PrepPass rather than taken from retired PTCE forms. It is independent and not connected to PTCB.
