Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules decide who goes first so traffic moves safely. In Rhode Island you yield rather than force your way, and you give extra room to stopped emergency vehicles and to pedestrians.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right when arriving together. At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to any vehicle already there and to the vehicle on your right.
Turns and pedestrians
When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and turn only when there is a safe gap. Yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, stopping if needed to let them cross safely.
Move Over law
When you approach a stopped emergency or maintenance vehicle showing flashing lights, move over a lane if you can, or slow down and pass with caution.
