Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, protect other road users, and limit distractions. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance and buses
Keep at least a three-second following distance in good conditions and add time in rain, snow, or heavy traffic. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm out, and stay stopped until it withdraws them.
Distracted driving
Rhode Island requires hands-free operation and prohibits using a handheld phone or device while driving. Texting while driving is banned, so set your phone before you start.
Seat belts
Rhode Island enforces its seat belt law as a primary offense, so you can be stopped and cited for an unbelted occupant alone. Buckle up before you drive and require your passengers to do the same.
