Signs & Signals
Rhode Island traffic signs use shape and color so you can read them quickly. Recognizing each one helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, and white regulatory signs state laws such as speed limits that you must obey.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped. A flashing red light is the same as a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate opposing traffic and white lines separate same-direction lanes. A broken white line allows lane changes when it is safe, while solid lines discourage crossing.
