Speed & Conditions
Posted limits are set for ideal conditions. Rhode Island expects you to slow down when weather, traffic, or the road makes a lower speed the safe choice.
Posted maximums
Rhode Island posts up to 65 mph on interstate highways, with much lower limits in cities, towns, and school zones. Always obey the posted signs.
Adjust to conditions
You must never drive faster than is safe for current traffic, weather, and road conditions, even when that speed is below the posted limit. Slow down and increase following distance in rain, snow, or fog.
School zones
Obey the reduced school-zone speed during posted hours and be ready to stop for children and crossing guards.
