Connectors and Prepositions
Linking words and prepositions signal how ideas relate. This chapter covers contrast, method, exception, and dependent prepositions.
Contrast, Method, and Exception
'Even though' signals contrast, 'by + -ing' explains method, and 'except' marks the one thing left out of a general statement. Be careful with 'besides', which means 'in addition to', not 'apart from'.
Dependent Prepositions
Learn fixed pairings such as 'apologise for', 'rely on', and 'depend on'. These prepositions follow convention and must be memorised with the verb.
