This chapter explains what the United Kingdom is, the countries and capitals within it, and its national symbols.
The Four Countries
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain refers only to England, Scotland and Wales. The capital of the UK is London; other capitals are Edinburgh (Scotland), Cardiff (Wales) and Belfast (Northern Ireland).
Nations and Patron Saints
Each country has its own patron saint and saint's day: St George for England (23 April), St Andrew for Scotland (30 November), St David for Wales (1 March) and St Patrick for Northern Ireland (17 March). The UK's currency is the pound sterling, divided into 100 pence.
