Searching and Drugs Awareness
How searching works as a condition of entry, the need for consent, and what to do if you find drugs.
Consent to search
A door supervisor cannot search someone by force. Where searching is a clearly displayed condition of entry, a customer who refuses can be refused entry instead of being searched without consent.
Conducting a search
Best practice is same-sex searching, with consent, in view of a witness or CCTV, carried out professionally and without discrimination. Keeping records protects both the customer and the door supervisor.
Finding drugs
If you find suspected drugs, follow the venue's drugs policy: secure the item, record the find, and hand it to the police. Do not keep, return or dispose of it yourself, and do not make false accusations.
