Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Right-of-way rules keep intersections orderly by deciding who proceeds first. In Washington you yield, keep right, and make room for emergency vehicles.

Intersections

At a four-way stop, the first to arrive goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before you turn.

Roundabouts

Enter a roundabout to the right and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to vehicles already circulating. Signal before you exit and watch for cyclists and pedestrians.

Emergency vehicles and lane use

When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren, pull to the right edge of the road and stop until it passes. On multilane roads keep right except when passing, so faster traffic can use the left lane.
