Drainage, Waste, and Vent Systems
The drain, waste, and vent system is the largest single block on almost every journeyman plumber exam, and it is where the most arithmetic shows up. You are expected to size a drain from a fixture unit load, hold the right slope over a run, keep a trap seal intact, place a vent close enough to the trap to protect it, and put a cleanout everywhere a drain cleaner will need one. This chapter walks through fixture unit sizing, slope and fittings, traps and trap arms, the family of venting methods, and cleanout rules, with the numbers you will be asked to reproduce under time pressure.
Water Service, Distribution, and Backflow Protection
The water side of the exam tests whether you can deliver enough water at enough pressure to the highest and farthest fixture, while making sure nothing from the building can ever flow backward into the potable supply. That means sizing by water supply fixture units, doing pressure budget arithmetic in psi and feet of head, choosing the correct backflow device for the hazard, and knowing your approved materials and support spacing. The numbers in this chapter, especially 0.433 psi per foot and the 80 psi pressure-reducing valve threshold, appear on nearly every version of the test.
Fixtures, Water Heaters, and Special Wastes
This chapter covers everything you set, hang, or hook up at the end of the rough-in. Fixture clearance dimensions are pure memorization and pure exam points. Water heaters carry the highest life-safety stakes in residential plumbing, so the temperature and pressure relief valve, its discharge piping, the drain pan, seismic strapping, and combustion air are tested heavily. Indirect waste, air gaps, and grease interceptors round it out because they are the rules that keep food service and appliance waste from contaminating a potable system or a public sewer.
Fuel Gas Piping
Fuel gas questions are almost entirely arithmetic plus a short list of installation rules. You convert an appliance load in Btu per hour into cubic feet per hour using the heating value of the fuel, find the longest developed length from the meter to the farthest outlet, and use that one length to size every section of the system. Around that core sit the material rules, the shutoff valve and sediment trap requirements, connector limits, and the pressure test procedure. Get the two heating values and the longest-length method right and most of this section takes care of itself.
Codes, Permits, Testing, Plans, and Jobsite Safety
The last block of the exam checks whether you can operate legally and safely: pull the right permit, call the right inspection at the right stage, run the required tests on your rough-in, read a set of plans and an isometric, and keep yourself and your crew alive in a trench, in a confined space, and around an open flame. The code questions center on the adoption cycle and the authority of the local jurisdiction. The safety questions come almost entirely from the OSHA construction standards, and the numbers there, especially 5 ft for trench protection and 19.5 percent oxygen, are non-negotiable memorization.
