Automatic Transmissions
The torque converter couples the engine to the transmission and multiplies torque; its lockup clutch improves cruise economy.
Dark, burnt-smelling fluid indicates overheating and clutch/band damage; healthy ATF is red and translucent.
Slipping clutch packs or low line pressure cause delayed, harsh, or flaring shifts and overheating.
Manual Transmissions & Clutch
A clutch that slips under load has a worn disc or weak pressure plate; too little free play also causes slipping.
Excessive clutch pedal free play prevents full release, causing grinding and hard shifting.
The pilot bearing supports the input shaft tip and should be inspected whenever the clutch is serviced.
Driveline & Differential
CV joints transmit power smoothly through steering angles; a worn outer joint clicks during sharp turns.
Worn U-joints cause a clunk on acceleration and a vibration that increases with speed.
The differential lets drive wheels turn at different speeds; gear ratio equals ring-gear teeth divided by pinion-gear teeth.
Heating & Air Conditioning (A7)
The compressor pressurizes refrigerant, the condenser rejects heat to condense it, and the evaporator absorbs cabin heat.
The metering device (expansion valve or orifice tube) drops pressure into the evaporator; the desiccant removes moisture.
Refrigerant must be recovered with approved equipment, and the correct charge is set by weight; overcharging reduces cooling.
General Service, Tools & Safety
Micrometers measure precise outside dimensions, dial indicators measure runout and endplay, and feeler gauges measure clearances.
Torque wrenches tighten fasteners to specification, and lug nuts are tightened in a crisscross pattern; torque-plus-angle stretches critical bolts.
Always support vehicles at designated lift points with rated jack stands and wear proper eye and hand protection.
