Safety, Cal/OSHA, and Chemicals

Excavation, Trenching, and DigAlert

Call DigAlert (811) at least two working days before digging, as required by Government Code section 4216, so utilities can be marked.
Protect trenches 5 feet deep or more (and shallower if a hazard exists) with sloping, benching, shoring, or a trench box.
Keep spoil piles and equipment at least 2 feet back from the trench edge, and have a competent person inspect trenches daily.
A competent person identifies hazards and has authority to take prompt corrective action, including stopping unsafe work.

Cal/OSHA Programs and Heat Illness

California employers must maintain a written Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) with hazard identification, training, and inspections.
The Heat Illness Prevention standard requires shade, cool drinking water, rest breaks, acclimatization, and training for outdoor workers.
Recognize heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache) early and cool the worker before it becomes heat stroke.

Equipment Safety

Shut off the engine and disconnect the spark plug or use lockout/tagout before clearing a jam or servicing powered equipment.
Mow across slopes with walk-behind mowers, and up and down with riding mowers; never remove machine guards.
Operate trenchers and chippers with bystanders clear, hands away from moving chains and feed chutes, and never reach into a running feed.
Use a trained spotter and backup alarm and check blind spots when backing trucks, trailers, or equipment.

Pesticides and Chemical Safety

Applicators applying pesticides for hire must hold the proper credential, such as a Qualified Applicator License (QAL) or Certificate (QAC).
The pesticide label is the law; follow its rates, sites, restrictions, and required PPE exactly, and consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Wear label-required PPE such as chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and long sleeves and pants when handling pesticides.
Triple-rinse empty pesticide containers and dispose of them per label and regulations; never reuse them for food or water.

PPE, Lifting, and Tree Work

Lift with bent knees and a straight back, keep the load close, and avoid twisting to protect against back injuries.
Treat all overhead power lines as energized and keep required clearance with ladders and tall equipment.
Use chainsaw PPE (chaps, eye and hearing protection, gloves, hard hat) and a proper rope-and-saddle climbing system tied into a sound anchor for tree work.
