ASVAB

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) — 135 questions · 197 minutes · Passing score: There is no pass mark. Enlistment eligibility turns on the AFQT score, which is computed from four of the tests (Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge) and reported as a percentile between 1-99 — a rank against a 1997 national sample of 18 to 23 year olds, not a percentage of questions answered correctly. DoD's ASVAB pages do not state a minimum AFQT for enlistment.. PrepPass also publishes a complete study guide for this exam as a downloadable book (336 pages, 120 practice questions inside, $19.99).

Arithmetic Reasoning

A train travels at a constant speed of 60 miles per hour. How long will it take to travel 180 miles?

  1. A3.5 hours
  2. B2 hours
  3. C4 hours
  4. D3 hoursCorrect

Why: Time equals distance divided by speed. Dividing 180 miles by 60 miles per hour gives 3 hours. Keeping the units consistent lets the miles cancel and leaves hours.

Mathematics Knowledge

If 3x + 7 = 22, what is the value of x?

  1. A5Correct
  2. B3
  3. C7
  4. D9

Why: Subtracting 7 from both sides gives 3x equals 15. Dividing both sides by 3 gives x equals 5. You can check by substituting 5 back into the equation.

The exam itself

ASVAB, by the numbers.

Questions135 questionsThe computer version, CAT-ASVAB, which DoD says is used at all MEPS: 135 scored questions across 10 tests (10 or 15 per test). On top of those, each examinee also gets unscored “tryout” questions in 2 to 4 of the tests, so the number of questions you actually see is higher and varies. The paper version, P&P-ASVAB, has 225 questions. CAT-ASVAB is adaptive — each question is chosen from your answers so far — so two people do not see the same questions.
Time197 minutesThe sum of the CAT-ASVAB's 10 separate test time limits as DoD prints it, without tryout questions. Each test is timed on its own; when tryout questions are added to a test, that test gets extra time (Arithmetic Reasoning goes from 55 to 113 minutes, for example). Most people finish well inside the limits, but DoD's own pages disagree on the typical length — its Fact Sheet says about 1 1/2 hours on average, its What to Expect page about 2 hours. The paper version's time limits total 149 minutes. The unproctored PiCAT has no time limits on its tests.

Questions

Asked before starting.

Is the practice really free, or does it stop after a few questions?

All 800 questions, the timed mock and the report are free with no sign-up. A free account only adds saving your progress. The study guide book is sold separately, $19.99 one-time; nothing in the practice requires it.

Is your mock the same as the real ASVAB?

No. Ours is 100 questions in 120 minutes; the real exam is 135 questions in 197 minutes. Use the mock for stamina and section timing, not as a score predictor.

What score do I need?

There is no pass mark.

Is there a study guide for the ASVAB?

Yes. PrepPass sells ASVAB — Complete Study Guide (2026), a PDF + EPUB download, $19.99 one-time; the practice on this page stays free without it. See the study guide →
