Job Site Preparation

Protecting surroundings

Materials are staged where they endanger no one, pedestrians get walkways and signs, and hot kettles are kept away from buildings and never placed on the roof.

Walkways
Pedestrian walkways at least 4 feet wide; construction railings at least 42 inches high.

Kettle location
At least 20 feet from combustibles and building openings; never inside or on the roof.

Overhead lines
Treat every overhead conductor as energized until the owner verifies and visibly grounds it.

Tear-off or recover

A new covering may go over an old one only in the situations the code lists, and never over a wet or deteriorated base, over slate or tile, or over two existing layers.

No recover where the roof already has two or more applications of any covering.

Undamaged slate or tile may be reinstalled; aggregate surfacing may not.

Asbestos roofing
Remove intact where feasible, use wet methods, never drop or throw, and lower by the end of the shift.
