Safety

California roofing safety is Title 8: the injury prevention program, heat illness, hot asphalt handling, ladders, and fall protection that changed for residential roofing on July 1, 2025. Personnel and job site safety

Every employer keeps a written Injury and Illness Prevention Program and holds tailgate meetings. Heat, kettles and ladders each have their own rules.

At least every 10 working days.

Shade present above 80°F; high-heat procedures at 95°F.

Hot buckets
Never carried on ladders; carrying buckets no larger than 6 gallons.

Fall protection

Residential-type roofing follows Section 1731; other roofing follows Section 1730. Personal fall arrest systems must meet Section 1670.

Residential roofing
Slopes through 7:12: protection at a fall distance of 6 feet or more; steeper than 7:12: regardless of height.

Other roofing
Roofs more than 20 feet high; warning lines 34 to 45 inches high, at least 5 feet from the edge.

Fall arrest
Free fall no more than 6 feet; maximum arresting force 1,800 pounds with a harness.
