Safety
Safety is about 21% of the exam — up from 17% in the 2022 study guide. It covers employee safety (programs, PPE, wet cement, silica, heat, noise) and job site safety (falls, impalement, pumps, power lines, traffic, housekeeping and the environment), under Cal/OSHA's Title 8. Employee safety
Every employer keeps an Injury and Illness Prevention Program and a Code of Safe Practices, trains workers at hire, and holds tailgate meetings at least every 10 working days. Wet cement is caustic: waterproof boots and gloves, kneepads, no jewelry, and immediate washing with clean water. Silica controls follow Title 8 Table 1 — water on saws and breakers. Heat rules require a quart of water per worker per hour, shade above 80 °F, and high-heat procedures at 95 °F.
Job site safety
Personal fall protection is required for falls over 7½ ft, and guardrails are 42–45 in high with a mid-rail. Protruding rebar up to 6 ft above the work surface is capped or troughed with approved covers at least 4 in square. Pumps are set up per the manufacturer, never used to lift other loads, and inspected daily. Keep booms 10 ft from lines up to 50 kV and never over them. Haulers of 2½ cu yd or more need automatic backup alarms.
