Disinfection & Safety

An esthetician has just finished using stainless steel tweezers on a client. What must happen before the tweezers are immersed in disinfectant?

  1. AThey must be wiped with a dry towel and returned to the drawer
  2. BThey must be rinsed in cool water only, since soap deactivates disinfectant
  3. CThey must be washed with soap and water, rinsed, and driedCorrect
  4. DThey must be immersed while still soiled so the disinfectant reaches the debris

Why: Disinfectant cannot penetrate oils, makeup, or skin debris, so every implement must first be cleaned with soap and water, rinsed, and dried before full immersion for the labeled contact time. Immersing a soiled implement wastes the solution and leaves organisms alive. Dry-wiping and storing removes nothing. Soap does not deactivate a properly used disinfectant when the tool is rinsed and dried first.CCR Title 16 §979

Facial Treatments

What is the correct approach to extractions during a facial?

  1. ASqueeze with bare fingernails for better control
  2. BContinue extracting until every visible lesion is cleared, regardless of time
  3. CSoften the skin first, use gentle even pressure with covered fingers or a clean extractor, limit the total extraction time, and stop if the skin becomes traumatizedCorrect
  4. DUse a lancet to open the skin so the contents release easily

Why: Extractions are performed on softened skin with gentle pressure through clean gauze or a disinfected extractor, kept brief to limit trauma and post-inflammatory pigmentation. Clearing every lesion in one visit causes bruising and scarring. Puncturing skin with a lancet breaks the skin barrier and is outside an esthetician's scope, and bare fingernails cut skin and transfer bacteria.CCR Title 16

Questions

Asked before starting.

Is the practice really free, or does it stop after a few questions?

All 100 questions, the timed mock and the report are free with no sign-up. A free account only adds saving your progress. The study guide book is sold separately, $14.99 one-time; nothing in the practice requires it.

Is your mock the same as the real California Esthetician?

No. Ours is 100 questions in 90 minutes; the real exam is 85 questions in 90 minutes. Use the mock for stamina and section timing, not as a score predictor.

What score do I need?

Not published by California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. 16 CCR § 932(b) says only that the Board sets the passing score by a criterion-referenced method, and PSI's bulletin gives the method with no number; neither publishes a percentage.

Is there a study guide for the California Esthetician?

Yes. PrepPass sells Esthetician State Board Exam — Complete Study Guide (2026), a PDF + EPUB download, $14.99 one-time; the practice on this page stays free without it. See the study guide →
