The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to reason with numbers and solve problems using arithmetic, algebra, and basic geometry. It rewards clear setup and efficient calculation rather than advanced mathematics. Most questions can be solved with careful reading and a well-chosen equation.
Translate Words into Equations
Most quant problems describe a situation you must convert into math. Identify the unknown, assign it a variable, and write an equation that captures the relationship. Practice spotting keywords: 'of' often means multiply, 'per' signals a rate, and 'is' means equals.
Handle Percentages and Rates Carefully
Successive percentage changes multiply rather than add, so a 20% then 10% discount is not 30% off. For rate and work problems, add rates (not times) when things work together. Always check that your units cancel to the units the question asks for.
Estimate and Sanity-Check
Before committing to an answer, ask whether its size is reasonable. A quick estimate can eliminate wrong choices and catch arithmetic slips. Plugging your answer back into the original wording is the fastest way to confirm it.
