In a liquid-and-powder (acrylic) service, how do the products actually harden?

Liquid-and-powder systems are a monomer (liquid) plus a polymer (powder) with a catalyst/initiator; when they meet, the small monomer units link into long chains in polymerization. That reaction gives off heat, which is why a client may feel warmth, and it needs no lamp at all. The choices that reverse monomer and polymer, or that require a lamp or photoinitiators, describe UV/LED gel, not liquid-and-powder; and polymerization releases heat rather than absorbing it.

You cure a client's gel in a lamp that was not made for that gel line. Within a week the gel is lifting at the edges and she says her fingertips itch. What is the most likely cause?

Over-curing is not what caused this, gel absolutely does require a matched lamp, and acetone was not part of this service.

A newly hired technician pours acid (methacrylic acid) primer into an open dish and brushes it over the whole nail and the surrounding skin so the acrylic will 'really stick.' What should you tell her?

More primer does not improve retention — proper prep and a thin, sparing application do; a non-acid primer is the gentler alternative.

A client arrives wearing gel polish and hard enhancements and wants everything removed today. Which statement about the removal solvents is correct?

Ethyl acetate is the slower, gentler non-acetone solvent used mainly on regular polish. The options calling non-acetone faster or stronger have it backwards, and calling acetone non-flammable is a serious safety error.

While applying nail tips you squeeze a large drop of adhesive onto each tip so it will 'hold longer.' What actually happens?

A heavy drop squeezes out onto the skin, leaves air bubbles under the tip and cures unevenly, which is a common cause of lifting and popped-off tips. Adhesive is not a primer and does not replace prep, and cyanoacrylate cures chemically — often with an activator — not under a lamp.

A client's enhancements lift within a few days every single time. Her nail plates look shiny and feel oily. What is the correct way to improve adhesion?

  • a.File the natural nail plate down thin until the product finally holds.
  • b.Clean and dry the plate, remove surface oil and moisture with a dehydrator, and lightly buff off the shine with an appropriate abrasive before applying product.

Adhesion needs a clean, dry, oil-free surface plus a little mechanical grip, so the correct sequence is cleaning, a dehydrator to take off surface moisture and oil, and a light roughening of the shine. Filing the natural nail thin to force a bond weakens and damages the plate and is never acceptable. Leaving oils in place is exactly what causes lifting, and a thicker bead only adds weight and stress to a bond that was never clean to begin with.

What does the overexposure principle mean for a nail technician?

It is not limited to 'toxic' products, it is not usually caused by one splash, and technicians do not develop immunity — their risk goes up with exposure, not down.

A regular gel client returns with itching, redness, swelling and small blisters on the skin around several nails and on her eyelids. Looking back, gel often flooded her sidewalls and cuticle area. What should you do?

The manicurist's job is to stop the service, describe what is seen without diagnosing, refer the client to a physician, and correct the technique so product never touches skin. Curing longer, calling it a fungus and selling a treatment, or adding a corrosive acid primer to skin all make the exposure worse.

During an inspection the inspector finds monomer poured into an unlabeled sports-drink bottle, sitting open on a shelf next to the salon's water heater. What is wrong with this?

Which statement about pH is correct for nail and skin care?

On the pH scale, 7 is neutral — that is pure water — and the skin and nail plate normally sit slightly below 7, on the acidic side. Products that are strongly alkaline raise the pH, causing keratin to absorb water, swell and soften, which is why harsh alkaline products can leave the plate weak or over-softened. Water is not acidic, a high pH softens rather than hardens keratin, and even dead keratin still reacts chemically to pH.
