Consent and Draping
Informed consent means the client understands the proposed treatment and voluntarily agrees, and can modify or withdraw consent at any time. Proper draping protects the client's privacy, warmth, and boundaries, exposing only the area being worked.
Professional Boundaries and Dual Relationships
Boundaries define the professional relationship and protect the client. A dual relationship, where the therapist also holds another role such as friend or business partner, can create conflicts of interest or power imbalances and must be recognized and managed carefully.
Laws, Regulations, and Confidentiality
Massage is regulated at the state and local level, including licensing and scope-of-practice rules that vary by jurisdiction. Client records are confidential and may be disclosed only with consent or as required by law. Practitioners should always verify the specific requirements where they practice.
