Counseling Skills and Interventions

The largest domain covers what counselors do in session: microskills, theory-based techniques, motivational interviewing, family and group interventions, and crisis response. Most items give a counselor statement or technique and ask you to name it, or give a situation and ask for the best-matched intervention.

Microskills and motivational interviewing

Basic listening skills are easy to confuse under time pressure: a paraphrase restates content, a reflection names feeling, a summary ties themes together. Motivational interviewing organizes these skills around evoking the client's own reasons for change.

Open questions, affirmations, reflective listening and summarizing are the core MI skills.

Constructive confrontation names a discrepancy without judgment; immediacy addresses what is happening between counselor and client now.

Theory-based techniques

Each major theory has signature techniques, and many questions simply ask you to connect the two. Learn the technique, the theorist and the target.

Cognitive and REBT

Ellis disputes beliefs (B) rather than events (A) or feelings (C); Beck targets distortions such as overgeneralization and the negative cognitive triad.

Behavioral

Systematic desensitization pairs relaxation with a graded hierarchy; negative reinforcement removes an aversive stimulus to increase behavior; extinction often brings a temporary burst.

Brief and postmodern

Solution-focused therapy uses miracle, exception and scaling questions; narrative therapy externalizes the problem.

Humanistic and existential

Gestalt uses the empty chair for unfinished business; logotherapy uses paradoxical intention; reality therapy follows WDEP.

Psychodynamic

Defense mechanisms such as displacement and sublimation, and transference of past relationship feelings onto the counselor.

Family and group work

Family theories differ in what they look for: triangles and differentiation (Bowen), boundaries and hierarchy (structural), or communication stances (Satir). Group items test stages of development and leader skills.

Triangulation diverts conflict between two people onto a third; differentiation of self is the goal.

Structural

Minuchin's therapy joins the family and marks boundaries that are enmeshed or disengaged.

Tuckman's forming, storming, norming, performing, with adjourning added in 1977.

Leader skills

Linking connects members' concerns; blocking stops harmful behavior; screening selects members whose goals fit the group.

Crisis intervention and safety planning

In a crisis the first job is safety and stabilization; exploration and insight come later. SAMHSA recommends collaborative safety plans and advises against relying on no-suicide contracts.

Warning signs, then coping strategies the client can use alone, then friends or family, then professionals and emergency services.
