Grammar Structures
Trinity ISE rewards accurate, natural English across a range of structures. This chapter reviews future forms, the passive, wish-type structures, relative pronouns, and inversion.
Future and Passive Forms
Use the future continuous ('will be lying') for an action in progress at a future moment. Use the passive with the past simple ('was built') when the subject receives the action at a finished past time.
Wishes and 'I'd rather'
'I'd rather you had told me' uses a past perfect to express a wish about the past. These structures use past forms to describe situations that are unreal or regretted.
Relative Pronouns and Inversion
After a superlative, 'that' is the usual relative pronoun. After a fronted negative phrase such as 'Not only', the subject and auxiliary invert: 'Not only did she meet the deadline'.
