Versant tasks reward accurate, automatic control of everyday grammar. This chapter reviews the tense, agreement, and sentence patterns that appear most often when you build or complete sentences under time pressure.
Verb Tenses and Time
Match the tense to the time frame. Use the present perfect ('have finished') for actions linked to now, the past simple for finished past actions, and the past perfect ('had finished') for an action completed before another past event.
Subject-Verb Agreement
The verb agrees with its true subject, not with a noun in a phrase between them. Words like 'each', 'every', and 'one of' are singular and take a singular verb.
Conditionals
The third conditional describes unreal past situations: 'If she had left earlier, she would have caught the train.' The 'if' clause uses the past perfect and the result clause uses 'would have' + past participle.
