Mechanical Engine Fundamentals
The cylinder head, block, valvetrain, and rotating assembly must all seal and move within precise clearances measured by micrometers, bore gauges, and Plastigage.
Low compression on a cylinder points to leaking valves, worn rings, or a failed head gasket; a leak-down test locates where the pressure escapes.
Torque-to-yield head bolts are stretched into their yield range and must be replaced, following the specified torque-plus-angle sequence.
Lubrication & Cooling
Engine oil lubricates, cools, cleans, and helps seal the rings; low idle oil pressure on a worn engine usually reflects excessive bearing clearance.
The thermostat regulates coolant flow, the pressure cap raises the boiling point, and the water pump circulates coolant; each is a common overheating suspect.
Milky oil or bubbles in the coolant indicate an internal coolant leak such as a failed head gasket or cracked casting.
Computerized Engine Controls
The PCM uses inputs from the MAF, oxygen, crankshaft/camshaft position, throttle position, and coolant sensors to control fuel and spark.
Fuel trim shows how the PCM compensates: positive trim adds fuel for a lean condition, negative trim removes fuel for a rich condition.
Loss of the crankshaft position signal typically causes a no-spark, no-injector-pulse no-start.
Ignition, Fuel & Emissions
Coil-on-plug ignition fires each plug directly under PCM control, so a failed coil sets a cylinder-specific misfire code.
The EVAP system captures fuel vapors, and a loose gas cap is the most common cause of a small-leak code.
EGR lowers combustion temperature to reduce NOx, while the catalytic converter reduces HC, CO, and NOx after combustion.
Diagnostic Strategy
OBD-II uses a standardized 16-pin connector and generic DTCs; a P030x code identifies a misfire in a specific cylinder.
Confirm the customer complaint, retrieve codes and freeze-frame data, then test the actual system rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
Vacuum leaks lean the mixture and raise fuel trims, especially at idle; smoke testing helps locate them.
