Introduction
Laptops, tablets, and phones are where most users actually meet computing, and they are where a support technician spends a surprising share of the day. Portable devices pack the same fundamental parts as a desktop — processor, memory, storage, display, and connectivity — into a compact, battery-powered, heat-constrained package, and that compactness changes how you service them. A part that unclips from a desktop in seconds may be a soldered-down module in a laptop; a battery that is a harmless brick on a shelf becomes a fire hazard when it swells. This chapter covers the laptop and mobile hardware you must recognize, the wireless and wired technologies that connect these devices, the safety rules around lithium-ion batteries, and the security and management tools that matter because mobile devices leave the building.
The recurring theme is constraint: space, power, and heat are all in short supply, so mobile design trades serviceability and raw performance for portability and battery life. Understanding that trade-off is what turns a list of parts into real diagnostic judgment.
Laptop components
A laptop integrates compact versions of desktop parts alongside display-specific hardware, and many of those parts are replaceable modules a technician can service. Knowing which is which saves hours.
- Storage — SSDs dominate. Modern laptops overwhelmingly use solid-state drives rather than spinning hard disks. Flash storage draws less power, produces no heat from moving parts, and — critically for a device that gets carried, bumped, and dropped — resists shock because it has no read/write heads to crash. Many laptop SSDs are M.2 modules; others are 2.5-inch SATA drives.
- Memory — SO-DIMM, not DIMM. Laptops use the smaller SO-DIMM form factor for RAM rather than the full-size DIMM a desktop uses. The two are not interchangeable; a desktop DIMM will not fit a laptop's slot. As with desktops, the DDR generation must match the board.
- Wireless — the WLAN card is often an M.2 module. The Wi-Fi (WLAN) adapter in many laptops is a small, replaceable or upgradeable M.2 card, which is why a failed or outdated wireless adapter is frequently a quick, inexpensive fix rather than a motherboard swap.
- Display — the vanishing inverter. Older LCD laptops used a CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent) backlight, and that backlight needed an inverter to supply the high AC voltage it required. Modern panels use LED backlights, which run on low DC voltage and no longer need an inverter at all. This matters for troubleshooting: on an older machine, a dim or dark screen that still shows a faint image often points at the inverter or backlight circuit.
Mobile connectivity
Phones and tablets reach the world through several technologies, each matched to a particular range and purpose. Choosing or diagnosing the right one starts with knowing how far each is meant to reach.
- NFC — a few centimeters, for tap-to-pay. Near Field Communication works over a very short distance (a few centimeters) and is what enables contactless payments when you tap a phone at a terminal. Its short range is a security feature, not a limitation.
- Bluetooth — short range, for peripherals. Bluetooth pairs and connects peripherals — headsets, keyboards, speakers, wearables — over short range. When a user wants to connect a wireless headset to a phone, the audio link runs over Bluetooth even if NFC is used to initiate the pairing.
- USB-C — the modern universal connector. USB-C is a small, reversible connector (it has no "wrong way up") that carries both charging and data and has become the standard on most Android phones and many laptops. Older phones used Micro-USB or Mini-USB, and Apple's own connector is Lightning.
- USB-C can carry video and power too. With the appropriate standard — Thunderbolt or DisplayPort alt mode — a single USB-C cable can deliver video, data, and power at once, which is how a modern laptop drives an external monitor and charges over one cable.
- Expandable storage. Many Android phones and tablets accept a microSD card to expand storage — a phone-appropriate answer where a desktop would use a drive.
Power and battery safety
Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space, and that density is exactly why they demand respect. A technician's judgment here is a safety matter, not just a repair one.
- A swollen battery is a hazard — replace and recycle it. A bulging or swollen lithium-ion battery is a sign of internal failure and a genuine fire risk. The correct action is to stop using the device, safely replace the battery, and recycle the old one through proper channels — never keep using it, and never try to "release the gas."
- Never puncture or crush a cell. Physical damage to a lithium cell can cause it to catch fire or rupture. Puncturing, crushing, or freezing a battery are all dangerous and wrong.
- A loose, intermittent charging port usually means a worn DC jack. When a laptop charges only intermittently and the port feels loose, the most likely fault is a worn or damaged DC jack (charging port) that needs repair or replacement — not a software or display problem.
- After an update, check battery usage before blaming hardware. If battery life suddenly drops after a software update, the smart first step is the battery-usage screen in settings, which shows which apps or processes are draining power. Replacing hardware or swapping the SIM before checking that data is premature.
Mobile security and management
Because mobile devices leave the building — and get lost, stolen, and left in taxis — security and central management are essential in any organization.
- Full-device encryption protects data at rest. Encrypting the whole device, tied to a passcode, keeps stored data unreadable if the device is lost or stolen. Airplane mode, Do Not Disturb, and screen timeout do not protect the data itself; only encryption does.
- Screen locks and biometrics gate access. Passcodes, fingerprint readers, and face unlock prevent unauthorized use of the device in the first place.
- MDM centralizes control. Mobile Device Management lets IT enforce security policy, push configurations, and remotely wipe a lost or stolen device from a central console. In an enterprise, MDM is how a scattered fleet of phones stays compliant.
- Remote locate and wipe. Lost-device features let a user or IT find, lock, or erase a missing device before its data is exposed.
A quick sensor note the exam likes: when a tablet's screen fails to auto-rotate, the sensor involved is the accelerometer/gyroscope, which detects orientation — not the proximity sensor (which blanks the screen during calls), the ambient light sensor (which adjusts brightness), or the fingerprint reader.

Worked example — a charging complaint, triaged
A user says their laptop "won't charge right." Two facts change the diagnosis completely. Case A: the port feels loose and charging cuts in and out when the cable is wiggled. That physical, intermittent symptom points at a worn DC jack — a hardware repair. Case B: the battery charges fully but drains far faster than it used to, starting right after a system update. That points at software, so the first move is the battery-usage screen to find the offending app — not a battery replacement. Same complaint, opposite fixes. The discriminator is when and how the symptom appears, which is exactly the kind of user-questioning the troubleshooting methodology (Chapter 5) is built on.
Common traps
- Confusing NFC with Bluetooth. NFC is centimeters and payments; Bluetooth is short-range peripherals. A wireless headset connects over Bluetooth.
- Assuming a modern laptop screen has an inverter. Only CCFL (older) panels do. LED-backlit panels have none — so an inverter is not the culprit on a current machine.
- Trying to service a swollen battery instead of replacing it. Swelling means replace-and-recycle, full stop. Never puncture or crush.
- Putting a desktop DIMM in a laptop. Laptops take SO-DIMM. The full-size module will not fit.
- Reaching for hardware first on a post-update battery drain. Check the usage stats before assuming a bad battery.
- Thinking encryption and a screen lock are the same protection. A lock gates access; encryption is what keeps the stored data unreadable if the device is defeated or the drive is pulled.
