Using Air Brakes Safely

Driving with air brakes safely means understanding that heavy vehicles need much more room to stop than cars, that air brakes add a short lag before they take hold, and that heat is the enemy of braking on long downgrades. This chapter covers how to calculate total stopping distance, how to brake normally and in emergencies, how to keep brakes from fading on hills by choosing the right gear and using proper braking technique, and what to do when the low air pressure warning comes on. Stopping Distance and Brake Lag

Total stopping distance for an air brake vehicle is made up of four parts: perception distance (while you notice a hazard), reaction distance (while you move your foot to the brake), brake lag distance, and braking distance. Brake lag is unique to air brakes: after you press the pedal it takes time, roughly half a second, for air to travel through the lines and apply the brakes, adding extra distance. Both greater weight and higher speed increase the distance needed to stop, so a loaded truck at highway speed needs far more room than a car. Drivers must leave extra following distance to account for all of this.

Normal, Controlled, and Emergency Braking

For a normal stop, push the brake pedal with steady, controlled pressure that slows the vehicle smoothly without locking the wheels, then ease off as you come to a stop. Locking the wheels can cause a skid and loss of steering control, especially on vehicles without anti-lock brakes. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help keep the wheels from locking during hard braking so you can keep steering control; ABS does not shorten your normal stopping distance or let you drive faster, it simply helps you retain control. In an emergency, brake so that the vehicle stays in a straight line and you can steer, using either controlled or stab braking depending on whether the vehicle has ABS.

Steady controlled pressure
Apply smooth, firm pressure for normal stops instead of pumping the pedal, and avoid locking the wheels.
Locked wheels skid
Wheels that lock up can cause a skid and loss of steering, especially without ABS.
ABS keeps control
ABS prevents wheel lockup in hard braking so you can steer, but it does not shorten normal stopping distance.

Downgrades, Brake Fade, and Proper Braking Technique

Brake fade is a loss of braking power caused by overheated, overused brakes; the drums expand and the linings grip less as heat builds. It is a major danger on long or steep downgrades. The most important defense is to select a low gear before starting down, so engine braking helps hold the vehicle back, and use the brakes only to supplement the gear. The recommended braking method is snub braking: apply the brakes firmly enough to feel a definite slowdown, hold until your speed drops about 5 mph below your safe speed, then release to let the brakes cool, and repeat as needed. Do not fan the brakes lightly or continuously, which builds heat and can use up air faster than the compressor replaces it.

Heat causes fade
Overusing the brakes overheats them, expanding the drums and reducing stopping power.
Choose gear before the hill
Select a safe low gear before descending, because downshifting after gaining speed is difficult and dangerous.
Engine braking first
Let the low gear and engine hold the vehicle back, using the brakes only to supplement it.
Snub braking method
Brake firmly to slow about 5 mph below your safe speed, release to cool, and repeat down the grade.
Do not ride the brakes
Light, continuous braking builds heat and can drain air pressure, leading to fade or reduced braking.

Responding to Low Air Pressure and Brake Failure

If the low air pressure warning comes on while driving, treat it as an emergency: brake to a stop safely and get off the road as soon as possible, because a total loss of air can occur without much warning. If pressure keeps dropping, the spring brakes will apply automatically in the range of about 20 to 45 psi, which can stop the vehicle suddenly, so it is far better to stop under control first. Never ignore the warning or try to reach a distant destination. If your service brakes fail, options include downshifting, using the spring/parking brakes, pumping hydraulic brakes if equipped, or steering onto an escape ramp on a downgrade.
