Cal/OSHA Worker Safety

Apply lockout/tagout to isolate and secure energy sources before servicing equipment.
Follow ladder safety with three points of contact, proper angle, and stable footing.
Prevent heat illness on rooftops with water, rest, shade, and pacing during high temperatures.

Combustion and Carbon Monoxide

Treat carbon monoxide as a colorless, odorless toxic gas from incomplete combustion.
Shut down and correct a cracked heat exchanger that can mix flue gases with supply air.
Provide carbon monoxide alarms in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances as required by California law.

Confined Space and Refrigerant Safety

Identify confined spaces by limited entry/exit and lack of continuous occupancy, and test the atmosphere before permit-required entry.
Protect against frostbite from liquid refrigerant with gloves and eye protection.
Store refrigerant cylinders upright, secured, away from heat, and never overfilled.

Applicable California Codes

Follow the CMC for mechanical installation, venting, combustion air, and equipment access.
Follow the CEC for electrical wiring, disconnects, grounding, and overcurrent protection.
Follow the CPC for approved condensate drainage disposal.
Never bypass safety controls such as high-limit or high-pressure switches; correct the underlying fault.
