Services and Disconnects
A single service is limited to a maximum of six disconnecting means, each in a separate enclosure in the 2023 NEC.
The service disconnect for a one-family dwelling must be rated at least 100 A, 3-wire.
Overhead service-drop conductors up to 300 V require 12 ft clearance over residential driveways.
Service equipment (non-dwelling) must be field marked with the maximum available fault current.
Grounding and Bonding
Grounding electrode conductor size comes from Table 250.66; the rod-only portion never needs to exceed #6 Cu.
Equipment grounding conductors are sized from Table 250.122 by the overcurrent device rating.
A single made electrode must be supplemented unless its resistance to earth is 25 ohms or less.
Main and system bonding jumpers connect the grounded conductor to equipment at one point; the 12.5% rule applies above 1,100 kcmil.
Overcurrent and Panelboards
Small-conductor limits cap #14/#12/#10 Cu at 15/20/30 A respectively.
The next-standard-size rule permits rounding up to the next standard device for circuits 800 A and below when conditions are met.
Each panelboard must be protected by an overcurrent device not exceeding its rating.
Standard device ratings (240.6) include 15, 20, 30, ... 90, 100, 110, 125 A and higher.
Transformers, Parallel Conductors, and Standby
Conductors are permitted in parallel only in sizes 1/0 AWG and larger; paralleled ampacities add together.
Emergency systems must restore power within 10 seconds; legally required standby within 60 seconds.
Generator output conductors must be rated at least 115% of the nameplate current.
Interactive inverter back-fed breakers follow the 120% busbar rule of 705.12.
