Optical Instruments

The lensmeter reads lens power, axis, add, prism, and optical center. Pupillometers measure PD, distometers measure vertex distance, and a lens clock measures surface curvature.

The lensmeter is the primary lens verification instrument.
A distometer measures vertex distance; a pupillometer measures PD.
A Geneva lens clock reads surface base curve and detects warpage.

Impact Resistance and Standards

The FDA requires dress lenses to be impact resistant, historically shown by the drop-ball test. ANSI Z80.1 governs dress eyewear tolerances; ANSI Z87.1 governs occupational safety eyewear.

FDA drop-ball test: a 5/8-inch steel ball dropped from 50 inches must not fracture the lens.
ANSI Z80.1 sets tolerances for prescription dress lenses.
ANSI Z87.1 safety eyewear passing high impact is marked Z87+.

HIPAA and Professional Ethics

Opticians handle protected health information and must keep prescriptions and records confidential under HIPAA. Ethics require verifying questionable prescriptions and maintaining hygienic, calibrated equipment.

HIPAA requires patient health and Rx information to be kept private.
Confirm a questionable Rx with the prescriber before dispensing.
Sanitize frames and tools and calibrate instruments regularly.

Core Optical Math

Optical math underlies verification and fitting: Prentice's rule for prism, transposition, spherical equivalent, decentration, and minimum blank size. These calculations recur throughout dispensing.

Prism (prism diopters) = decentration (cm) x power (D).
Frame PD = A measurement + DBL; total decentration = frame PD - patient PD.
Spherical equivalent = sphere + one-half the cylinder.

Minimum Blank Size and Compensation

Minimum blank size ensures a lens blank is large enough to cut out after decentration. Vertex compensation adjusts ordered power when the fitted vertex differs from the refracted vertex.

MBS is approximately effective diameter + (2 x per-lens decentration) plus a small tolerance.
Moving a minus lens farther from the eye increases effective minus power, so order less minus.
Compensation matters most for high-powered prescriptions.
