Reading Comprehension
25% del examen- Locate the topic sentence
- The main idea is often stated in a single sentence, frequently at the beginning or end of a paragraph. Ask, 'What is this whole passage mostly about?' and choose the answer broad enough to cover every detail.
- Distinguish main idea from details
- Supporting details are specific facts, examples, or reasons. A correct main-idea answer summarizes the passage; a detail answer is true but too narrow to be the overall point.
- Avoid overly broad or narrow answers
- Wrong choices are often too general (going beyond the passage) or too specific (covering only one sentence). The best answer matches the exact scope of the text.
- Summarize in your own words
- Before reading the choices, restate the passage's point in one short sentence. Then pick the option closest to your summary to avoid being misled by tempting distractors.
- Go back to the text
- For detail questions, reread the relevant sentence instead of trusting recall. The answer is stated directly in the passage and can be verified word for word.
- Watch for sequence signal words
- Words like first, next, then, and finally establish order. Track them carefully when a question asks what happens before or after a given step.
- Read labels and instructions literally
- Directions, warnings, and dosage limits mean exactly what they say. Note qualifiers such as 'not to exceed,' 'every six hours,' or 'as needed' because they define limits.
- Beware of negative wording
- Questions asking which choice is NOT stated or which is the exception require you to eliminate every option that IS supported by the passage.
- Identify the author's purpose
- Ask whether the author is trying to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe. Persuasive text makes a claim and offers reasons; informative text explains without taking sides.
- Use context clues for vocabulary
- When a word is unfamiliar, read the surrounding sentence for synonyms, examples, or contrasts that reveal its meaning. Substitute your guess back into the sentence to confirm it fits.
- Recognize text structure
- Passages may be organized by sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, or problem and solution. Signal words like 'because,' 'however,' and 'such as' reveal the structure.
- Detect tone through word choice
- Tone is the author's attitude, revealed by connotation. Words like 'required' feel formal, while 'creaked' and 'shadows' create an eerie mood.
- Separate fact from opinion
- A fact can be proven or measured; an opinion expresses a belief or judgment. Phrases like 'in my opinion,' 'best,' or 'should' usually signal opinion.
- Judge source credibility
- Peer-reviewed journals and official databases are more reliable than blogs, social media, or anonymous forums. Prefer current, expert-reviewed material for medical questions.
- Identify unsupported claims
- A claim backed by studies or data is stronger than one asserted without evidence. Look for cited research to distinguish supported facts from bare assertions.
- Watch for biased language
- Emotional or one-sided wording can signal that an author is trying to persuade rather than inform, which affects how much you should trust the content.
- Read legends and keys
- Maps and charts include a legend that explains symbols and colors. Always check the key before interpreting what a line, color, or icon represents.
- Interpret schedules and patterns
- Tables and timetables often follow a repeating interval. Identify the pattern to predict missing values, such as the next departure time.
- Make logical inferences
- An inference is a conclusion supported by evidence but not stated outright. Combine clues from the text and any graphics, and make sure your inference is fully backed by the passage.
- Use text features to navigate
- Tables of contents, indexes, glossaries, and headings help you locate information efficiently. Match the feature to the task: glossary for definitions, index for specific terms.

- Use PEMDAS: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division (left to right), then addition and subtraction (left to right). For 4^2 + 3 x 2, compute 16 + 6 = 22.
- Find common denominators to add fractions
- Convert fractions to a shared denominator before adding or subtracting. For 3/4 + 1/8, rewrite 3/4 as 6/8, then add to get 7/8.
- Align decimals when adding or subtracting
- Line up the decimal points and fill in zeros. For 5.6 - 2.85, write 5.60 - 2.85 to get 2.75.
- Convert between fractions and decimals
- Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal: 1/8 = 0.125. To reverse, place the decimal over its place value and simplify: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4.
- Simplify ratios by the greatest common factor
- Divide both terms by their greatest common factor. The ratio 12:18 divides by 6 to become 2:3 in lowest terms.
- Solve proportions by cross-multiplication
- For 4/6 = x/9, cross-multiply to get 6x = 36, then divide by 6 so x = 6. This method scales recipes and doses reliably.
- Convert among fractions, decimals, and percents
- To make a fraction a percent, divide and multiply by 100: 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%. To take a percent of a number, multiply by its decimal form.
- Calculate percent increase and decrease
- Find the percent of the original amount, then add or subtract. A 25% discount on $40 is $10 off, giving a $30 sale price.
- Isolate the variable using inverse operations
- Undo operations in reverse order. For 3x + 7 = 22, subtract 7 to get 3x = 15, then divide by 3 so x = 5.
- Do the same operation to both sides
- Whatever you do to one side of an equation you must do to the other. For y/4 = 9, multiply both sides by 4 to find y = 36.
- Substitute to evaluate expressions
- Replace the variable with its value and simplify. For 2(x + 3) when x = 4, compute 2(7) = 14, doing the parentheses first.
- Check your answer
- Substitute your solution back into the original equation to confirm it makes a true statement, catching arithmetic mistakes before moving on.
- Convert within the metric system by powers of ten
- Multiply or divide by 10, 100, or 1000. Since 1 meter = 100 centimeters, 2.5 meters = 250 centimeters.
- Use area and perimeter formulas
- Area of a rectangle is length times width; perimeter of a square is four times a side. A 7-inch square has a perimeter of 28 inches.
- Track units through every step
- Write the units beside each number so they cancel correctly. Reporting area in square units and volume in cubic units prevents mismatched answers.
- Round appropriately
- Identify the target place value, then look at the digit to its right: 5 or more rounds up. Rounding 3,847 to the nearest hundred gives 3,800.
- Calculate the mean
- Add all values and divide by the count. If five scores average 82, their sum is 82 x 5 = 410, which you can rearrange to find a missing value.
- Understand mean, median, and mode
- The mean is the average, the median is the middle value in order, and the mode is the most frequent value. Choose the measure that fits the question.
- Read charts and tables carefully
- Check titles, axis labels, and units before interpreting a graph. Note whether values are rising, falling, or peaking to answer trend questions.
- Compute totals and parts of a whole
- To find a percentage of a group, divide the part by the total: 12 boys out of 30 students is 12/30 = 40%.

- Genotype is the genetic makeup (the alleles present), while phenotype is the observable trait that results from that genotype.

- Mitosis produces two identical body cells for growth and repair, while meiosis produces gametes with half the chromosome number for reproduction.

- Ensure pronoun-antecedent agreement
- A pronoun must match its antecedent in number. Singular antecedents like 'each nurse' take singular pronouns: 'Each nurse must complete her charting.'
- Choose the correct verb tense
- Use simple past for a completed action at a specific past time: 'I went to the clinic yesterday,' not 'I have went.'
- Set off introductory elements with a comma
- Place a comma after an introductory word or phrase: 'After the exam, we went to lunch.' The comma separates it from the main clause.
- Use apostrophes for possession
- Singular possession puts the apostrophe before the s: 'the nurse's station.' Plural possession of a regular noun puts it after: 'the nurses' lounge.'
- Join independent clauses correctly
- Use a semicolon between two related independent clauses without a conjunction, or a comma plus a coordinating conjunction: 'The clinic was busy; many patients waited.'

- A complete sentence has a subject and a predicate and expresses a full thought. 'The physician reviewed the chart' is complete; a fragment like 'Because the patient was resting' is not.
- Combine clauses logically
- Join independent clauses with a comma and a coordinating conjunction to show the relationship: 'The test was hard, but I passed it' shows contrast.
- Prefer active voice for clarity
- In active voice the subject performs the action, which is usually clearer and more direct: 'The nurse gave the medication' rather than 'The medication was given by the nurse.'
- Avoid double negatives and comparison errors
- Use only one negative in a clause, and do not stack comparatives: say 'the easiest test,' not 'the most easiest test.'
- Distinguish common homophones
- Use 'their' for possession, 'there' for place, and 'they're' for 'they are.' 'The students submitted their reports' shows possession.
- Apply reliable spelling patterns
- Remember 'i before e except after c' (receive) and watch double letters. Spell medical terms carefully: pneumonia, hemorrhage, diarrhea, asthma.
