Basic Control: Shifting, Backing, Turning, and Coupling

Controlling a heavy vehicle is a set of learned procedures rather than instincts carried over from driving a car. Shifting a manual transmission requires matching engine and road speed, backing requires giving up the natural habit of turning the wheel the direction you want to go, turning requires planning for a trailer that cuts the corner, and coupling requires a fixed sequence in which every step protects the one before it. This chapter covers shifting and engine speed ranges, safe backing and the GOAL habit, turning and off-tracking, coupling and uncoupling in order, parking, and the correct use of engine brakes and retarders.

Shifting and Engine Speed

A truck with a manual transmission has no synchronizers, so the driver must match speeds manually using the double-clutch method. To upshift you release the accelerator, push in the clutch and move the shifter to neutral, release the clutch, let the engine and gears slow to the rpm that matches the next higher gear, then push in the clutch again, select the gear, release the clutch, and accelerate. Downshifting reverses the middle step: while in neutral with the clutch released, you press the accelerator to raise engine rpm because a lower gear turns faster at the same road speed, then push in the clutch, select the lower gear, release, and continue. Knowing when to shift comes from the tachometer and the manufacturer's operating rpm range, not from guessing by feel; shift up when the engine reaches the top of the range and downshift before the engine begins to lug. Two situations demand a downshift decided in advance. Before a downgrade you select the gear you need while you still have road speed to make the shift, because once gravity takes over you may not be able to get into a lower gear at all. Before a curve you slow to a safe speed and downshift while still traveling straight, so that you can accelerate slightly through the curve for stability. Never coast in neutral: you lose engine braking, you lose the ability to accelerate away from a hazard, and the practice is illegal in most states.

Double clutch through neutral on every shift
Release the accelerator, clutch to neutral, release the clutch, match engine speed, clutch again, select the gear, release and accelerate.
Raise engine rpm in neutral when downshifting
A lower gear turns faster at the same road speed, so the engine must be brought up to match before the gear will engage smoothly.
Shift by the tachometer and the engine's operating rpm range
Shifting too early lugs the engine and shifting too late over-revs it. Learn the range for the specific engine you drive.
Downshift before a grade or a curve, never during it
On a grade you may not be able to select a lower gear once you are descending, leaving you with no engine braking.
Never coast in neutral or with the clutch depressed
You give up engine braking and the ability to accelerate out of trouble, and it is a violation in most states.

Backing Safely

Backing is the most common source of preventable property damage in trucking, and every rule about it exists because the driver cannot see. The first rule is to avoid backing whenever a pull-through or a different approach is available. When you must back, back toward the driver's side so you can look directly out the window and see the rear of the trailer and the target space; blind-side backing hides the entire danger zone behind the trailer and should be a last resort. Before you begin, get out and look, which drivers abbreviate as GOAL: walk the full path, check for low obstructions, poles, curbs, drop-offs, parked equipment, and people, and note the clearances on both sides. Use a helper whenever one is available, agree on hand signals before you start, and establish that any signal you do not understand means stop. Back slowly, because speed removes your ability to correct, and use both mirrors continuously rather than favoring one. Steer with small corrections; a trailer responds to steering input with a delay and then keeps moving, so a large correction quickly becomes an over-correction and then a jackknife. If the trailer gets off your intended line, stop and pull forward to reposition rather than trying to save a bad angle. Pulling up is always free; hitting a dock post is not.

Get Out And Look before and during every back
Walk the path, check overhead and side clearances, and re-check if the situation changes while you are maneuvering.
Use a helper and agreed hand signals whenever possible
Establish before you start that any signal you cannot see or do not understand means stop immediately.
Back slowly and correct with small steering movements
A trailer reacts with a delay and then keeps turning, so oversteering leads directly to a jackknife.
Pull forward to reposition instead of saving a bad angle
Repositioning costs seconds; a collision with a dock, a pole, or another vehicle costs far more.

Turning and Off-Tracking

When a long vehicle turns, the rear wheels follow a shorter path than the front wheels, an effect called off-tracking. The longer the wheelbase, the more the rear cuts the corner, which is why a tractor-trailer that stays in its lane at the front can still run a trailer tire over a curb or into an adjacent lane at the rear. For a right turn, the technique is to keep the rear of the vehicle close to the curb as you approach, turn wide as you complete the turn rather than before it, and never leave a gap on your right that a car or cyclist can move into. If you must swing into the left lane to make the turn, delay the swing until you are actually in the intersection so drivers behind you cannot misread your intention or slip past on the right. For a left turn, reach the center of the intersection before starting to turn so the trailer does not cut across the corner, and if there are two left-turn lanes, use the right-hand one so that the trailer has room to off-track without striking a vehicle beside you. Turning also affects stability. Weight transfers to the outside tires in a turn, and a high center of gravity plus speed is the recipe for a rollover, so complete your braking before the turn and keep speed low through it.

The trailer needs room to off-track, and the outside lane keeps it clear of vehicles beside you.
Complete braking before the turn and keep speed low through it
Weight transfers to the outside tires in a turn, and a high center of gravity plus speed causes rollovers.

Coupling and Uncoupling

Coupling has an order, and each step exists to prevent a specific failure. Inspect the fifth wheel first: it should be properly greased, securely mounted, with no missing or damaged parts, the jaws open, and the release handle in the unlocked position. Check the trailer, chock its wheels if it has no spring brakes, and set the trailer height so the nose is slightly lower than the center of the fifth wheel, because the trailer should be raised a little as the tractor backs under. Line up directly in front of the kingpin and back slowly until the coupler just touches the trailer, then stop, secure the tractor, connect the air lines and the electrical cord, supply air to the trailer, and confirm the trailer brakes are locked before backing the rest of the way under. Back under in low gear so the coupling seats firmly against the kingpin. Now check the connection three ways: perform a tug test by pulling gently forward with the trailer brakes locked, look under the trailer with a flashlight to confirm the jaws are closed around the shank of the kingpin and there is no space between the plates, and verify the release handle is in the locked position with the safety latch engaged. Finally raise the landing gear fully, secure the crank handle, and remove the chocks. Uncoupling reverses the logic: position the rig straight, ease pressure on the locking jaws, chock the trailer wheels, lower the landing gear until it takes the weight, disconnect and secure the air and electrical lines, pull the release handle, and pull the tractor partially clear before checking that the trailer is fully supported and then pulling out.

Set trailer height slightly lower than the fifth wheel
The trailer should be lifted a little as the tractor backs under. A trailer set too high lets the tractor slide underneath without coupling.
Connect air lines and lock the trailer brakes before backing fully under
Charged trailer brakes keep the trailer from rolling away as the fifth wheel engages the kingpin.
Verify the coupling three ways
Tug test against locked trailer brakes, visual check under the trailer with a flashlight, and confirmation that the release handle is locked.
Raise the landing gear fully and secure the crank handle
Partially raised gear can strike railroad crossings and dock approaches, and a loose handle can injure someone passing by.
Support the trailer before releasing the fifth wheel
Chock the wheels and lower the landing gear onto the ground first, or the trailer nose can drop when the tractor pulls out.

Parking, Stopping, and Retarders

A normal stop in an air brake vehicle is made with steady, controlled pressure on the pedal so the vehicle slows smoothly and stays in line; stab braking and pulling the trailer hand valve are not normal-stop techniques and can cause a trailer skid. When you park, shut off the engine, apply the parking brakes, leave the transmission in gear on a manual vehicle, and chock the wheels if there is any chance the vehicle could roll. Service brakes must never be relied on to hold a parked vehicle because air pressure bleeds down. Starting on an upgrade is a controlled release: hold the vehicle with the parking brake, partially engage the clutch until you feel the drivetrain take hold, then release the parking brake while adding throttle so the vehicle moves forward without rolling back. Engine brakes and retarders are speed-control tools that save the service brakes on long descents, and they should be used routinely on dry pavement. On wet, icy, or snow-packed roads, however, they should be switched off, because the braking force is applied only to the drive wheels and can break traction and start a jackknife. Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands on opposite sides so that a blowout or a rut cannot tear it from your grip, and keep both hands on the wheel whenever the vehicle is moving.

Make normal stops with steady, controlled brake pedal pressure
Stab braking and the trailer hand valve are not normal-stop tools and can put the trailer into a skid.
Park with the engine off, parking brakes applied, and wheels chocked if needed
Service brakes bleed off as air pressure drops and cannot hold a parked vehicle.

A blowout or a deep rut can wrench the wheel out of a one-handed or hooked-wrist grip.
