Key Concepts of Service Management
ITIL 4 is built on a shared vocabulary of core concepts. Understanding terms such as service, value, outcome, cost, risk, utility, and warranty is essential before exploring the wider framework. These concepts define how a service provider and a service consumer co-create value together.
The Four Dimensions of Service Management
To support a holistic approach to service management, ITIL 4 identifies four dimensions that are critical to the effective and efficient facilitation of value. All four must be considered for every service. External factors captured by the PESTLE model also influence each dimension.
The Guiding Principles
The guiding principles are universal, enduring recommendations that guide an organization in all circumstances, regardless of changes in its goals, strategies, or structure. There are seven principles, and they can be applied to any initiative or relationship. They encourage continual improvement and a shared way of working across the organization.
Service Value System
The ITIL service value system (SVS) describes how all the components and activities of an organization work together as a system to enable value creation. It takes opportunity and demand as inputs and produces value as its output. The SVS is designed to be flexible and to discourage siloed working.
Service Value Chain
The service value chain is the central element of the service value system. It is an operating model that outlines the key activities required to respond to demand and facilitate value creation through products and services. Its six activities can be combined in many sequences to form value streams.
ITIL Practices
ITIL 4 describes 34 management practices, each a set of organizational resources designed for performing work or accomplishing an objective. A subset of these practices is emphasized at the Foundation level. Practices support the service value chain activities rather than replacing them.
