Branch Circuits, Feeders, Conductor Sizing and Overcurrent Protection

This is the largest and most calculation-heavy block on the journeyman exam, and almost every question comes down to the same chain of reasoning: find the load, apply the continuous-load multiplier, pick a conductor from the ampacity table, adjust it for heat, then choose an overcurrent device. Master that sequence and you will answer branch-circuit, feeder and voltage-drop questions with the same handful of moves.

Services, Grounding and Bonding, Panelboards and Transformers

Grounding and bonding is the subject electricians most often get wrong in the field and on the exam, largely because two different conductors with similar names do completely different jobs. This chapter separates the grounding electrode system, which stabilizes voltage to earth, from the equipment grounding system, which clears faults, and then adds the service, panelboard and transformer rules that surround them.

Wiring method questions split cleanly into two kinds: table lookups that reward memorization and fill calculations that reward practice. Box fill and conduit fill are the two calculations you will see most, and both hinge on counting things correctly before any arithmetic starts.

Motor circuits are the one place in the code where conductors, short-circuit protection and overload protection are all sized from different numbers and different percentages, which is exactly why the exam loves them. Once you accept that the table full-load current sizes almost everything except the overload, motor questions become routine arithmetic.
