1

Disinfection, Sanitation & Salon Safety

Infection control is the single largest block on the California manicurist written exam, about 35% of the questions, and it is also the number one reason salons get cited during an inspection. This chapter covers the three levels of decontamination, implement handling, the foot spa cleaning cycle, blood spills, chemical safety, and the products and tools California flatly prohibits.

2

Manicure, Pedicure & Nail Enhancement Services

About a quarter of the exam asks how you actually perform the service: the order of the steps, the shapes, the products, and where the legal line sits between grooming and cutting. This chapter walks through manicure and pedicure procedure, cuticle work, polish and gel, acrylic and tips, safe removal, and massage contraindications.

Nail Anatomy, Disorders & Diseases

One fifth of the exam covers the structure of the nail unit, how nails grow, and the difference between a cosmetic disorder you may work around and a medical condition you must refuse and refer. Knowing the correct anatomical names is the fastest way to pick up points in this section.

Nail Chemistry & Product Knowledge

About a tenth of the exam asks what is actually in the bottle and how it behaves on the nail and on you. The big ideas are polymerization, adhesion, solvency, and the overexposure principle that explains why a nail tech becomes allergic to a product she has used safely for years.

California Law, Licensing & Board Rules

The final tenth of the exam is about the rules that govern the license itself: who issues it, what it lets you do, how you keep it, and what happens when an inspector finds a problem. Most questions here are answered by remembering that the Board regulates people and establishments separately and that health and safety violations carry the heaviest consequences.
