Nail Chemistry & Product Knowledge
About a tenth of the exam asks what is actually in the bottle and how it behaves on the nail and on you. The big ideas are polymerization, adhesion, solvency, and the overexposure principle that explains why a nail tech becomes allergic to a product she has used safely for years.
Monomers, Polymers, and Curing
A monomer is a single small molecule and a polymer is a long chain of them linked together. Every nail enhancement system works by turning liquid or gel monomers into a hard polymer, either by a chemical initiator in a powder or by a photoinitiator triggered by light.
Primers, Dehydrators, and Adhesives
Adhesion is mechanical and chemical. Filing a light texture creates mechanical grip, while dehydrators and primers manage moisture and oil so product can bond chemically. These small bottles hold some of the most corrosive materials on the table.
Solvents, Removers, and pH
A solvent dissolves another substance. Acetone is the workhorse of the nail world because it breaks down lacquer and swells soak-off products until they release. pH matters mostly for the skin around the nail and for products such as cuticle removers.
Overexposure, Sensitization, and Allergy
This is the concept the exam most wants nail techs to internalize. Overexposure means too much contact with a chemical over too long a period. Once the body becomes sensitized, the allergy is usually permanent and even tiny future exposures trigger a reaction.
Storage, Labeling, and Disposal
Product handling is where chemistry meets the inspection checklist. Nearly every storage rule exists for one of two reasons: fire risk from flammable liquids, or someone not knowing what is in an unlabeled bottle.
