General Property and Casualty Product Knowledge
40% of the exam- Proof of loss
- Signed and sworn, within 60 days after the loss unless extended in writing (New York Insurance Law §3404 standard fire policy).
- Appraisal
- Each side names an appraiser within 20 days of a written demand; an award of any two sets the amount of loss, not coverage.
- Texas valued policy law
- A total loss by fire of insured real property is a liquidated demand for the full policy amount (Insurance Code §862.053).
- Flood waiting period
- Most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period (TDI).
- Additional living expenses
- Pays only the extra cost of living elsewhere; TDI's glossary says policies cap it at 20% of dwelling coverage.
- Minimum limits
- $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident bodily injury, $25,000 property damage (Transportation Code §601.072).
- UM burden
- The insurer bears the burden of proving a vehicle is uninsured (Insurance Code §1952.109).
- Coinsurance
- Payment = insurance carried ÷ insurance required × loss, less deductible.
- General average
- A voluntary sacrifice for the common safety is shared by all interests in proportion to value.

- Restore the insured to the pre-loss financial position, not better.
- Cancellation
- A permitted Texas cancellation takes effect no earlier than the 10th day after the notice is mailed (Insurance Code §551.104).
- Nonrenewal
- Written notice at least 60 days before expiration (Insurance Code §551.105, as amended effective Sept. 1, 2023).
- Exemplary damages
- Awarded only on clear and convincing evidence (Civil Practice and Remedies Code §41.003).
Texas Statutes and Rules for Adjusters
20% of the exam- Exam
- InsTX-ALAdj16, 150 questions, 150 minutes, $49; apply within 12 months of passing.
- Expired license
- Up to 90 days: renew with late fee; 90 days to 1 year: new application without exam; 1 year or more: retake the exam.
- Catastrophe
- Deadlines extend by 15 days after a declared weather-related catastrophe (Insurance Code §542.059).
- Tax returns
- May be required only by court order or for fire or loss-of-income claims (Insurance Code §542.004).
- FY2027 caps
- Maximum weekly TIB $1,314, minimum $197 for injuries from Oct. 1, 2026 through Sept. 30, 2027 (TDI Division of Workers' Compensation).
- Death and burial
- Death benefits 75% of average weekly wage; burial up to $10,000.
