Which sequence describes double clutching to shift into a higher gear?

When downshifting, what do you do differently compared with upshifting?

You are making a tight right turn at an intersection in a tractor-trailer. What is the correct technique?

Turning wide at the end keeps the trailer from riding over the curb while preventing another driver from slipping into the gap on your right. Swinging left first invites a vehicle beside you, a left signal misleads other drivers, and straddling lanes for the whole turn blocks traffic unnecessarily.

What is off-tracking, and why does it matter in turns?

The other sequences release the coupling or the lines before the trailer is supported, which can drop the trailer or tear the air lines apart.

After uncoupling, you notice the landing gear crank handle is left extended. Why must it be secured?

You are stopped on an upgrade in a manual-transmission truck and need to start moving without rolling back. What is the correct technique?

Holding the vehicle with the parking brake until the clutch takes hold prevents rollback into whatever is behind you. Releasing the brake first causes rollback, dumping the clutch at high rpm shocks the driveline, and starting in a high gear stalls the engine.

Steady, controlled pedal pressure produces a smooth stop and keeps the vehicle in line. Stab braking is an emergency technique, the trailer hand valve alone can cause a trailer skid, and coasting in neutral removes engine braking and control.

Why should you avoid coasting in neutral while driving a commercial vehicle?

  • a.It wears out the clutch pedal spring
  • b.It causes the tachometer to read incorrectly
  • c.You lose engine braking and the ability to accelerate out of a hazard, and it is illegal in many states

In neutral the engine no longer helps control speed and you cannot power away from a developing hazard, which is why most states prohibit it. Clutch springs, tachometer accuracy, and ABS operation are unrelated to being in neutral.

What happens if you turn too sharply while backing a tractor-trailer?

Excessive angle between tractor and trailer during backing folds the units together and can crush the cab, fenders, or air lines. Trailer brakes do not lock on their own, the steer axle stays down, and the fifth wheel does not unlock from a sharp angle.

Why should you check the trailer height and the position of the fifth wheel jaws visually after coupling, even after a successful tug test?
