A rod, pipe or plate electrode has a limited earth contact area, so the conductor to it is never required to be larger than 6 AWG copper regardless of what Table 250.66 would otherwise demand. The 4 AWG limit applies to a concrete-encased electrode, and larger sizes are not required for any rod connection.
