Collection Procedures

A phlebotomist must collect a blood culture set, a PT/INR, a basic metabolic panel on a gel serum tube, and a CBC. Which collection sequence follows the standard order of draw?

  1. ABlood culture, light blue, gel serum tube, lavenderCorrect
  2. BLight blue, blood culture, lavender, gel serum tube
  3. CGel serum tube, blood culture, light blue, lavender
  4. DLavender, light blue, blood culture, gel serum tube

Why: The standard order of draw is blood culture (sterile) first, then the light blue sodium citrate coagulation tube, then serum tubes with or without gel, then heparin, then EDTA, then glycolytic inhibitor tubes. Drawing the blood culture first protects it from skin-flora contamination introduced by non-sterile tube handling. Every other sequence listed allows additive carryover into a tube where that additive causes error, most notably EDTA carried into a chemistry or coagulation tube.CLSI GP41

Patient Preparation

How should an outpatient be identified before venipuncture?

  1. AAsk the patient to state full name and date of birth, then match both to the requisitionCorrect
  2. BAsk, Are you Mr. Johnson, and proceed if the patient says yes
  3. CConfirm the name on the sign-in sheet
  4. DMatch the room number and the last four digits of the record number

Why: Two independent identifiers must be actively stated by the patient and matched against the requisition, most commonly full name and date of birth. Asking a yes-or-no question invites a confused or hard-of-hearing patient to agree incorrectly. A sign-in sheet is not a verified identifier and outpatients have no room number, which is never an acceptable identifier in any setting.CLIA

Passing scoreScaled score of 390 on a 200–500 scaleThis is a scaled score, not a percentage. Questions

Asked before starting.

Is the practice really free, or does it stop after a few questions?

All 300 questions, the timed mock and the report are free with no sign-up. A free account only adds saving your progress. The study guide book is sold separately, $14.99 one-time; nothing in the practice requires it.

Is your mock the same as the real NHA Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)?

No. Ours is 100 questions in 130 minutes; the real exam is 120 questions in 120 minutes. Use the mock for stamina and section timing, not as a score predictor.

What score do I need?

Scaled score of 390 on a 200–500 scale — as published by National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Confirm the current rule with them before your exam date.

Who administers the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification Examination?

National Healthcareer Association (NHA) — exam delivered by a PSI testing center, a live remote proctoring provider, or the candidate's own school or employer. NHA states that where live remote proctoring is used, the proctoring provider is selected for the candidate at registration.

How many questions are on the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification Examination?

120 questions (100 scored, 20 unscored pretest). NHA states that pretest questions do not affect the score and that only the scored questions count towards it.

How long is the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification Examination?

120 minutes. NHA's CPT certification page restates the same allowance as a two-hour exam.

How much does the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification Examination cost?

$134 — Examination application (National Healthcareer Association, per attempt); $195 — Recertification (National Healthcareer Association, every two years). NHA's store renders its prices client-side, so the price is visible to a human opening the linked product page but is absent from the page's HTML. The figure here was read from NHA's own store system on the retrieval date. An examination fee is charged for every attempt, so a retake costs another exam fee.

What languages is the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification Examination offered in?

English. English only, stated affirmatively in the handbook rather than merely absent from it: NHA does not provide translated forms, translation aids or interpreters.

Is the NHA Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) study guide a PDF?

Yes. NHA CPT Phlebotomy Study Guide — 2026 Edition downloads as PDF + EPUB (222 pages, 236 practice questions inside), $14.99 one-time, and the files are yours to keep. The 300 practice questions on this page stay free without it. See the study guide →
